This book draws on the work of anthropologist Alfred Gell to reinstate the importance of the object in art and society. Rather than presenting art as a passive recipient of the artist's intention and the audience's critique, the authors consider it in the social environment of its production and reception. A Return to the Object introduces the historical and theoretical framework out of which an anthropology of art has emerged, and examines the conditions under which it has renewed interest. It also explores what art 'does' as a social and cultural phenomenon, and how it can impact alternative ways of organising and managing knowledge. Making use of ethnography, museological practice, the intellectual history of the arts and sciences, material culture studies and intangible heritage, the authors present a case for the re-orientation of current conversations surrounding the anthropology of art and social theory. This volume has emerged out of a collaborative Network of Excellence (NoE) research project funded by the European Commission. The NoE is designed to strengthen excellence on 'Sustainable Development in a Diverse World' by integrating European research capabilities across disciplines and countries to provide society and polity with the instruments and tools for managing cultural diversity as a key element of a new strategy for sustainable development. The Network, which comprises 32 Institutes from Europe and beyond, has led to a growing realisation that scholars and practitioners need to be aware of each others' intellectual inspiration when approaching the sensitive question of the relationship between cultural diversity and sustainable development with the view to setting out policy recommendations which in Europe have wide application. ... It provides a bridge across the linguistic and intellectual traditions that currently sets scholars and practitioners in the field of diversity management apart from each other. The bibliography will be drawn from each of the partners active within the NoE, representing Europe and key nations such as India, where diversity is embraced as the essence of society and development. Abstracts will be provided in English of key literature, and the bibliography will support cross-cultural understanding of issues surrounding diversity and its management in society. Despite their ubiquity and cultural prominence, the academic study of arts festivals has long been neglected. The burgeoning festivals industry is, however, firmly embedded in both the arts funding and weekly calendar of European cities, and there is no doubt that festivals are fast becoming a defining feature of urban life in the twenty-first century. An assessment of their nature and impact is more pressing than ever before. The contributors to this volume explore the modern urban festival and the difference it makes to the experience and management of diversity in the city. Their research reveals an unsettling coupling of the celebration of local diversity with institutional amnesia, in which the memory of a festival hardly ever outlasts its funding.
